Be a Homeowner

Habitat homeowners meet three criteria: need, willingness to partner, and ability to pay their no-interest mortgage. Neither race, creed, color, marital status, nor religion are factors in choosing partner families.

Because ownership of a Habitat home is "a hand up, not a handout," homeowners (with help from their friends and family) are required to complete at least 350 hours of "sweat equity" to help match the 2,000 hours typically donated by volunteers.

Applicants must also demonstrate that they have the long-term capability and intention of assuming payments on their no-interest mortgage and maintaining their new home as good neighbors in their community.

As members of the Habitat family, homeowners typically give and receive support in an ongoing relationship with other Habitat partners.

To learn more about how you can become a Habitat homeowner, contact Amy at: (816) 461-6551 or [ email ]

Please Note: Truman Heritage Habitat presently does not do home repairs. Our construction staff is constantly busy with new builds, so time does not allow our staff to repair damaged homes .

The selection of families who will purchase homes from Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity will be done by the Family Selection Committee using the criteria in a way that does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, age, handicap, religion, marital status or because all or part of the applicant’s income is derived from public assistance programs.

What you should know about Habitat housing:

· Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization whose purpose is to build and sell decent, affordable housing at no profit and no interest to qualified, low-income families who need better housing.

· Truman Heritage Habitat only builds homes in Eastern Jackson County, Missouri. If you are interested in Habitat housing outside of our service area, please visit Habitat for Humanity International's website to locate an affiliate near you.

· Habitat builds homes for qualified applicants and sells them to those applicants with a no-profit, no-interest mortgage.

· Churches, businesses and individuals donate time, money and materials to Habitat. Most labor is done by volunteers and Habitat families themselves.
