40 Homes in Five Years!

40 Homes in Five Years!

Last year, the Board of Directors of Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity announced a bold new initiative: 40 Homes in Five Years! Essentially this means building as many homes in the next five years as the Habitat affiliates of Eastern Jackson County have built in the previous fifteen!

As year two draws to a close, visionaries of the affiliate attest that it not only CAN be done, it IS being done. Eight homes have been completed and three new homes are underway.

"This is a very stretching goal," says executive director Gina Elkins. "It will take nearly $7 million to make this five-year dream a reality--funds for building homes, additional staff to train and supervise volunteers, and the purchase of additional tools and equipment. The prospect is both daunting and exciting, some days more one and some days more the other! But my growing testimony is that God will provide, and that the many partners we need will be forthcoming."

This achievement would be another step toward the goal of the parent organization, Habitat for Humanity Inernational, which "seeks to eliminate povert housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a mater of conscience and action." For the Truman Heritage Habitat affiliate that goal would mean elimination of poverty housing and homelessness in Eastern Jackson County.

"To meet our goal," Elkins said, "we will need to acquire land--both in-fill scattered sites as well as a larger tract for a potential subdivision. We'll be putting our faith in God to guide us in this effort. Prayer will be a key in our continued growth and success. Next year we'll begin a Habitat prayer partners e-mail network that will help us reach out to individuals and churches that will uphold our ministry in their prayers. Habitat has always built on faith, and for this goal to be reached we will have to be faithful and work harder than we ever have before."

It's an exciting time to be involved with Habitat. If you would like to be part of turning this vision into reality, please call the Habitat office at (816) 461-6551 and help build it!
